Thank you to Year 6 for a fab time last week at our residential. All the teachers had a super time and that's thanks to all of you - for your hilarious moments, laughter and smiling faces. You gave every activity 100% effort, overcame fears (particularly of heights - well done Miss Batey) and just had a really good time! You were all a pleasure to take away.

4R Folk Music Workshop

4R have been working with folk musicians Amy and Chris from Focal Music. They have learnt new songs, listened to fabulous live folk music played on the fiddle and piano accordian, and tried their hand (or feet) at traditional clog dancing. Mr Raine was very impressed by how quickly the children learnt the new dance steps!

4R had a great time at Thornley Woods as they took part in all sorts of physical and mental activities such as pond dipping, adventure trails and bird-watching.

When we went pond dipping we found Mayfly larvae, Greater Water Boatmen and many more creatures. A great big thank you to Sarah, our tour guide - it wouldn't have been possible without her.

Year 3 DT Week

Year 3 had loads of fun during their DT week where they all made part of an Egyptian quilt. The children were involved with cutting, sticking and stitching - I have to say some ended up with more pin pricks than stitches in their quilts but everyone still thoroughly enjoyed taking part! The squares are currently getting stitched together and each class will then have a patchwork quilt - Egyptian style!

4D/R Trip to Thornley Woods

4D/R have had a fantastic time visiting Thornley Woods. There were of interesting things to do and see. Here are some of 4D/R's thoughts on the day:
"I had a fab time with Sarah group leader from the woodland centre. I liked the discovery trail the best because it was most exciting and we had to use maps." (Rhys)
"I enjoyed the pond dipping because we got to catch lots of interesting pond creatures." (Erin)
"I liked the discovery trail because I enjoyed looking for the letters on the trees." (James)

Here are some photographs of our day.
In the morning we went pond dipping. We found lots of interesting creatures in our nets. We used magnifying glasses to have a closer look at them in white trays.

We found ramshorn snails and dragonfly nymphs.

In the afternoon we had a discovery trail, it was really fun and the children had to read maps in order to solve the puzzle.

Musicians' Assembly

Today our musicians performed for the whole school and their parents in our special Celebration Assembly. Children played guitars, strings, woodwind and brass, and Year 6 children sang songs from 'Joseph' that they will be performing at the Sage soon in the Gateshead Schools Showcase Concert.
The children were a little nervous, but all performed superbly. Well done everyone!

Year Four are having fun this week using the laptops. we have based some of our work this week on our topic "Go Ahead Gateshead". The children have been researching the Bensham Tram Disaster of 1916 and the Gateshead Theatre Royal fire of 1891. They have created concept maps using 2Connect software, newspaper reports in Word and recorded radio reports using Audacity.

Year 6's Sound Poem

Year 6 have been studying a variety of poems about feelings and emotions. We have written a short anthology based on the sounds we could hear in the playground. We were not only thinking about the different sounds, but thinking about the feelings and emotions the sounds reminded us of. We wrote our poems in groups and used metaphors, personification and similes to help describe how the sounds made us feel. We hope you enjoy it as much as Miss Graham did!

The Sound of the Play Ground

In the haven of the peaceful playground,
The gentle wind carries an array of sounds…

An anthology of poems from Year 6

The wind enveloped me in its whistling way.
Footsteps were mice creeping up on me.
The grass crunched as people waded through the long stalks.
Trees swayed gently while bushes rustled,
And the air suffocated me in the smooth majestic sky.

The peaceful sounds enveloped me and soothed my ears,
As I strolled on to the yard.
The wind whistled calmly,
As it raced like a bullet through the elegant trees deeply agitating them.
The birds chirped tunefully,
As they glided elegantly through the air just skimming the leaves.
The relaxing silence was broken by the screeching of cars.
They were a raging storm, roaring down the road
With their clattering engines shouting loudly.

The mournful wind sighed amongst the shaky trees,
I heard distant humming like evil honey bees.
Blackbirds were cheeping, dogs were yapping and leaping around,
The playground was bursting with a variety of sounds!
The footsteps were mice squeaking round the flower pots,
The stones were clattered, darting like little live dots.
It was relaxing, it wasn’t loud,
The playground was bursting with a variety of sound.

The swaying grass rocked and rolled like an 80’s rock star.
The bees buzzed in the warm sunshine.
Drowned out footsteps stomped past my ear.
The tweeting birds were a beautiful symphony waiting for me to dance.

I lay still and peaceful on the grass, listening quietly.
Tranquil wind weaved through my fragile fingers.
Whispering trees swaying in the breeze were a choir of children.
Lush green leaves pirouetted like professional ballerinas.

Year 6 Trip to Eden Camp

Year 6 had a fabulous day at Eden Camp on Wednesday. The ex-prisoner of war camp in Malton, North Yorkshire, has lots of huts, all dedicated to different aspects of the 2nd World War. These ranged from how Hitler rose to power, what a typical street looked liked during the early 40s, if it had just been bombed and what it looked like during a black out.

All of the children's behaviour was exemplary and their enthusiasm was outstanding - a credit to Oakfield. Just to make the day even better, the sun was out so we all sunbathed over lunch then had an ice cream!

A massive thank you to Mrs Leonard, Mrs Ibbetson and Mrs Russell who came with us and helped enormously.

Well, the Year 3 digital media week seemed to be a huge hit this week with all the children. I have been in to help, in some lessons, and have been so impressed to see such enthusiasm and hard work from everyone. There has been some super work produced. The children have used some of our fantastic new 2Simple software, the digital cameras and the Digital Blue Movie Creators. I have to say I was very impressed to see Year 3 having a go at control technology. Well done to everyone in year 3, including Miss Tully and Mrs Simpson, for starting off our digital media weeks with such positive attitudes. I am very pleased you all enjoyed your week.You have set very high standards for the rest of us to follow! Mrs McCormack

In the last week of term, Show Racism the Red Card came into year 6 to do some workshops and raise awareness. We discussed the term racism, watched a DVD and had a quiz. In the 2nd workshop we played football.

6G's PE Week

6G had a brilliant week before half term - PE every day! We made dance routenes based on football moves to the Match of the Day theme tune, we played football, rounders, parachute games and even had our own Olympics competition. Check out our photos!

3T - 2Paint a picture

Speaking here is Kieran Costello and Kirsty Wade from 3T. This afternoon we have been using 2Paint a picture on the laptops. Our favourite ones were the spinner and patterns. 3T started their Digital Media week with a tough one, but they all managed fantastically! The children had to take a photo of their friend, upload them on to the computer, then try to distort the image as much as possible! The children really enjoyed doing this and found some very funny effects! Some examples are attached!

Year 3 began the week with using our new 2Simple software. 3S used 2Paint a Picture, where they used different effects to create a picture or pattern. Here are some examples of their work.

6M really enjoyed their PE week. We did athletics (long jump, shot, relay, javelin) badminton, volleyball, rounders, football, gymnastics - I am sure the list could go on further! We had a great time.

Robot Challenge

Recently, a team of four Year 5 pupils took part in a Robotics competition at Heworth Grange CLC. Using computer software they had to programme a Lego robot to complete six challenges. These included making it complete manoeuvring tasks, play 6-pin bowling, play bowls and park within a garage!! A great time was had by all with the team coming second, winning a Lego robot for the school and memory sticks for themselves. Well done Emma, Elizabeth, Dylan and Megan.

Super Year 3/4 Just Miss Out!!

The Year 3/4 football team completed their season as well deserved runners up in the Durham FA Knockout Cup, a competition that started with 64 teams. The final on Wednesday in Chester-le-Street involved Castletown (Sunderland), Lumley (Chester-le-Street) and Seaham (Peterlee) alongside us. The team got off to a slow start loosing 3-1 to eventual winners Seaham with an own goal getting us on the score sheet. The team raised their game after that with a 1-0 win over Lumley curtesy of an Aaran Sutton header he didn’t know too much about!! The final game against Castletown produced the best performance and a 3-1 win, with a goal from Aaran again and 2 from Lewis McNall. An excellent season from all involved and a well deserved final result. Well done!!!!

Congratulations to the Year 5 football team who jointly won the Felling Schools FA knockout cup on Thursday at Gateshead Stadium. After qualifying for the final way back in October the squad finally got the chance to compete against South Street, Wardley and Harlow Green. On a day of very few goals and four evenly matched teams it was always going to be close, and so it proved with just 3 goals scored in the 6 matches. After a winning start against South Street with Cameron Howell getting the goal, two 0-0 draws followed in close games containing lots of good football. It led to a nervous finish, as per usual, with nothing to separate ourselves and Wardley. Congratulations to all involved and hopefully more success will follow next season.

Stunning Fightback Secures Final Place

The year 3/4 football team reached the final of the Durham County Cup on Tuesday after a stunning comeback in their final match to top their group. They lined up alongside Colegate, Ousten from Durham and Rickleton in Washington in what was a tough semi final draw.
The first game was a fairly comfortable 3-1 win over Colegate, although it is fair to say that we didn’t play as well as we can. Aaran Sutton, Nick Hall and Lewis McNall with the goals. Next up was Ousten. Twice they took the lead and twice we fought back to grab a well earned 2-2 draw. A screamer of a volley and an own goal helping us on our way.
In the final game we were to play Rickleton, knowing that only a win would get us through. We had improved as a team as the tournament went on and this was by far the best performance. But despite passing the ball well, tackling hard and running their little heart out Rickleton still went in 1-0 up at half time. The second half was a different story and we were soon back on level terms when a Lewis McNall shot was deflected into the net. With a minute to go Aaran Sutton grabbed a winner that only just crossed the line after bouncing off the bar. The last few seconds really dragged but eventually the final whistle went and the final place was booked.

Well done to all – Jamie, Carl, Kieran, Kieran, Nick, Aaran, Megan, Callum and Lewis

The Final will Be played at Red Rose Primary School, County Durham, On Tuesday 13th May.
