Crowds turned out in their droves to our 'blue carpeted' (red was all sold out!) event last week. We held our annual Oakfield Oscars to celebrate the effort and achievements of children throughout the school.
Well done to all the nominees and all the winners. The paparazzi have sent us these photographs to remember the event.

Athletics 2010

Well done to all the children who took part in the Athletics festical this year at Gateshead International Stadium.
We had some fantastic results and all children showed great enthusiasm and perseverence.

A special well done to these children...
Cameron Mather who came 1st in the y3/4 boys 50m sprint with a time of 7.94 seconds and 1st in the y3/4 boys stading broad jump woth a distance of 1m 90.2 AND ALSO SET A NEW RECORD FOR GIS!
Sophie Ward who came 3rd in the y3/4 girls 60m sprint with a time of 10.12 seconds
Matthew Pendleton who came 2nd in the y3/4 boys 60m sprint with a time of 9.28 seconds
The year 3/4 boys who came 1st in the relay
Lewis McNall who came 1st in the y5/6 boys 80m sprint with a time of 11.15 seconds
The y5/6 boys who came 1st in the relay
Alanah Scott who came 1st in the y3/4 girls 600m run with a time of 2 mins 20 seconds
Jamie Johnson who came 3rd in the y5/6 boys 800m run with a time of 3 mins 43 seconds

Also a special thank you to Mr Mather who came along on the day and took some fantastic photographs of the children competing. What a star!

Where Past meets Present!

A group children from Oakfield made the short trip to Craigielea Care Home in Low Fell today armed with their favourite toys. Whilst there, they met some residents from the home who reminisced about and showed the toys they used to play with as children, whilst our children showed the residents how to use their toys. As you can imagine, the gap in technology between the types of toys was immense. The residents used to entertain themselves with the cup and ball, tiddly winks and spinning top as opposed to PSP, Nintendo DS and I Pod Touch. Both the children and the residents had a fantastic afternoon and learnt so much about each other's toys and life. Look out for the story appearing in the Evening Chronicle over the next couple of weeks.

4 Pine Recycling Challenge

This afternoon 4 Pine took part in the recycling challenge along with the rest of the school. the task was to design and create a face using only recycled materials. It was exciting to use the materials that we have been bringing in all week.

5 Maple Get Ahead by Recycling!

Along with the rest of the school today, 5 Maple constructed a face using only recyclable materials. The children brought in plastic, cardboard, newspaper and tins from home and the challenge was to use these to contstruct the face. We all worked together as a team in the baking heat and it soon became clear that the children were really enjoying themselves and rising to the challenge. The end result was fantastic. After we'd finished we deconstructed the face and packed up all of the rubbish into seperate bags to be taken away for recycling. Well done everyone!

Year 4 Cragside Visit

The weather was perfect as Year Four traced the footsteps of the famous North East entrpreneur and inventor, William Armstrong. This year we have been learning about water and inventions in our themed topic lessons. Cragside House and Gardens were the perfect place to visit, where we learned about how Amstrong used water power to run his many inventions and how hydroelectricity was first used here to provide lighting for the house.
Of course, our teachers made us trek for miles before we were rewarded with time on the adventure playground!
The guides commented on how well-behaved the children were, and were impressed by many of the questions they were asked.
A great day out for children and staff alike!

It's Great Fun to Run!!!

Our tiring trip to Saltwell Park today was to take part in Tesco Great School Run and made up of over 600 participating pupils from 12 schools. The course was a variety of up and down climbs and was 1.2 miles long. Everyone was exhausted after the grueling time spent running and to stop was the worst thing to do as it meant you had to start from scratch. The race distance seemed to get longer and longer because of the great but scorching weather. Joe won the overall Year 5 race. Well done! We all had a great time!!

Year 6 Big Skip

Well done Year 6 you did it; a non-stop sponsored skip for 6 whole hours! Hope your legs are not aching too much!!! You really pulled out all the stops to make today a huge success. Thank you. A further huge well done and thank you to those people who skipped for over an hour - you need a relaxing Radox bath!
Hopefully we've raised enough money to make a difference.

Girls Impress in Local Tournament

Recently we took part in the Joseph Swan Girls Football tournament. Due to the large number of girls who have been interested this year we entered 2 teams to take on Glynwood and Harlow Green. Even showers and a drop in temperature couldn’t dampen spirits. Oakfield 2 played superbly to become runners up and Oakfield 1 battled hard for a share of third place. Well done all.

The Great ‘Bug Hunt’

As part of the eco-teams work to gain the first eco-award, they recently carried out a biodiversity study. This was aimed at finding out what range of animals lived in the school grounds. The team and their 8 volunteers studied the woodland, field and their new orchard. Although no new species were discovered by the young David Attenboroughs, they were amazed by the numbers of insects found. Look out for the results on the school Eco-board!

4 Pine: Rio, Rainforests and Samba

This week 4 Pine have enjoyed finding out about Brazil during One World Week.
We have learned about the country, its people and customs, made carnival headdresses and played samba music. On Thursday we invited parents to take part in Mr Thompson's construction challenge - to build a famous Brazilian structure using only rolled up newspaper - can you work out which it is?

3 Elm's Spanish Week

This week 3 Elm have been studying Spain and have had the opportunity to taste Spanish meats and have even had a go at Flamenco dancing! As part of the contruction challenge, 3 Elm built 'La Sagrada Familia' the end results were fantastic!

5 Maple Rise to their Imperial Challenge!!

As part of One World week 5 Maple have been learning all about the People's Republic of China. We have studied it's culture and geography as well as learning about it's rich and diverse history. Perhaps one of the most important buildings in China is the Imperial Palace in Beijing and it is this structure that the children and parents tried to emulate using only rolled up newspaper and cellotape. There were some magnificent attempts and, I think you'll agree, we have some budding architects in our midst. Well done parents for coming in and lending a hand!!

The 3ASH Pizzeria was a success!

Today 3ASH decided to create some Italin style pizzas from our research on Italy for ONE WORLD WEEK. We spent some time yesterday researching and designing our pizzas. The children were eager to get started and thoroughly enjoyed creating their yummy pizzas and then of course eating them!
Jenny Slater, "I enjoued sprinkling the cheese on and when we cooked them the cheese melted!"
Tyler Harrison, "I loved making the pizzas, mine looked like a preying mantis."
Daniel Coulson, "The best part of the pizza making was eating them!"
Shannon-Lee Thompson, "I enjoyed making the pizzas, it was fun and I helped 2 people on my table to spread their tomatoe puree."

Tesco Great school run!

The Eco-team litter pick

As part of our aim to become an eco-friendly and eventually sustainable school the eco-team carried out a litter survey on our site. The 8 eco-warriors, one from each class, along with another class member carried this out to meet another of their action plan aims. The idea was to see how much litter was dropped or blown onto our site before relaying this to all members of our school community and to encourage proper disposal. (I hate to say this but 8 bin bags were filled!!) Next stage….campaign posters!

Semi Final defeat for Year 6

After battling hard to reach the semi final of the County Durham FA 7 a side cup, the Year 6 team fell at the penultimate hurdle. In a group of 5 schools the boys gave it there best go but lost to some excellent footballing sides. After defeats against East Stanley (1-3), West Boldon (1-4) and Castletown (2-3) they finally recorded a victory beating George Washington (2-1). Although a little disappointed they still have a chance of silverware in the Gateshead competitions.

Landscapes Of The Future

On Friday morning 4 Pine created amazing sculptures to depict the planet in 50 years time.
Lucy, a professional artist, joined the class and showed us images of sculptures by Sarah Sze, who uses recycled everyday materials to create landscapes of other worlds.
We then designed and created our own landscapes of the future.

Comfortable win for Year 6 boys team

On Thursday the year 6 team played their latest Felling FA league game at home to Colegate. With all 9 squad players on top form they dominated for the full 30 minutes and ran out 9-0 winners. Aaron scored 4, Jamie 3 and Oliver 2. Well played, the best you looked in a long time.

Girls Football Team Come So Close

The Year 5/6 girl’s football team came so close to making the final of the County Durham 7 a side cup. On Wednesday they travelled to Pelton for their semi final. First up was a game against Catchgate. A bright start saw us race into a 2-0 lead with goals from Megan C and Anna. This forced Catchgate to rally and they quickly pulled a goal back but we hung on to win 2-1. The second game was against the host team Pelton. It was a tight game with few chances, but unfortunately Pelton did nick a goal to run out 1-0 winners. Unlucky girls, but you have improved greatly as the season went on!

Row, Row, Row your boat………

But there was nothing gentle about it as 5 Willow used every last drain of energy when the virtual rowing machines arrived from Joseph Swan school. Years 5 and 6 all experienced the effort needed to row 400 metres in a timed competition against all Joseph Swan cluster schools. As the pictures show it was hard work! Well done to all, especially Carl, Nat, Alicia and Lauren B. who are the quickest year 5’s across all cluster schools.

5 Willow reach new heights!!

On Friday morning 5 Willow visited the Sunderland Climbing Wall as part of their Mountains topic. After gasps of fear at the size of the 23 metre wall it was on to the safety briefing and warm up. Then, at last, TWO HOURS of climbing fun. As confidence grew so did the level of challenge, and I think it is fair to say that everyone pushed themselves to exceed their goals. Well done 5 Willow, it was great to hear the encouragement you gave each other as well as seeing the fun that was had by all!

Here come the Girls………

After a Winter break that seems to have lasted a lifetime, the football season recommenced on Wednesday night with the girls team in the first round of the County Durham FA 7-a-side. On a cool evening first up was a game against the hosts Colegate. Early pressure saw Oakfield take a quick 2 goal lead through Megan C, but despite creating many more chances no further goals were added. The second game saw a tough 0-0 draw against Jarrow St Bedes, a game with chances at both ends but no one to apply the finishing touch. With Colegate and Jarrow drawing 1-1, it meant Oakfield progressed to the semi final, new s that was greeted by 10 screams so loud my eardrums are still ringing!!!

4 Pine and 4 Beech Visit a Hindu Temple

On Friday, year four were invited to visit the ISKCON Hindu Temple in Newcastle. Kirtida, the priest was very welcoming and taught us many interesting facts about the Hindu faith and culture.
We got to try on traditional Indian clothing - saris for the girls, and turbans for the boys. We played Indian drums, listened to stories from the Bavaghad Gita and watched Kirtida perform Puja - an act of worship. Kirtida also played the tamboura - a large stringed instrument which we discovered is made from a hollowed out pumpkin!
We were also treated to a Traditional Prashad meal made up of rice, a tomato and vegetable sauce with paneer cheese, puri bread and ice-cream. Mr Raine and Mrs Robson particularly enjoyed the puri bread.
