Music Celebration Day

Mr Raine took 30 of our musicians to take part in a Music Celebration Day at the Dryden Teachers' Centre. We worked with an artist to produce wooden leaves for a Music Tree sculpture for local musicians, the Avison Ensemble. When it's finished you will be able to view it on their website http://www.avisonensemble.com. We also learned to be conductors and heard Elizabethan music played by the Concert Royal, a trio of professional musicians from York.

Path Head Water Mill

Today 4 Pine braved the cold weather and visited Path Head Water Mill in Blaydon. We had a great time learning about the restored water mill and its past uses. We also saw examples of other renewable energy sources such as a wind pump and hydraulic ram. Our guide Trevor kept us informed and entertained.
This is what the children thought:
We learned:
“How the watermill was used in the past – for making flour” Cameron Richardson
“The mill was built by the Townley family to provide flour for their large house” Benjamin Jewers.
“How the mill ran by water power, not electricity” Hannah Thompson
“The mill was built in 1728 and it worked for 100 years.” Kayleigh Knight
“The wind pump and hydraulic ram pump water to a reservoir.” Niamh Renwick
“The mill was restored and opened to the public in 1998.” Rachel Tindale

What surprised us:
“The mill machinery was run by water power.” Matthew Stephenson
“How the sensory garden can be used by blind people.” Lewis Davis
“How quickly the water wheel could turn.” Lenny Dunn
“That the old machinery still works.” Olivia Binns

Our favourite parts:
“Being able explore the site.” Sophie
“Seeing the old water wheel turning.” Rachel Tindale
“Dipping my hands in the reed bed.” Niamh Renwick
“Making the wheel go faster.” Matthew Hadnum

Years 5 and 6 were treated to an afternoon with some of the Newcastle Eagles basketball team yesterday. The Players came in to talk to the children about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and a balanced diet. the children were even given the chance to shoot some hoops with the players. There was a slight height disadvantage though!

Water World

Our topic in Year Four is Water World.
We started by estimating how much of the Earth's water is potable (drinkable) and non-potable (undrinkable). Here's what we thought.

0
Here's the actual answer:

We were suprised that only 0.097% of the Earth's water is drinkable!
We are learning how we can help to protect this precious resource and how fortunate we are to have fresh water on tap.

Year 6 Journey Through Time

As part of our new topic we have been looking at The Depression during the 1930's. In particular we have been finding out about the Jarrow March.

Here is a diary entry written by Bethany, Elle and Owen
Download file

We also looked at photographs taken at the time of the march and thought about how the men might have been feeling.

Rubbish Dancing.

Year 5 have been learning about ecological issues in their dance topic this half term. Entitled 'Rubbish', the unit focuses on how household waste is recycled and the journey it makes from our bins to the recycling plant. Set to a sound track of industrial music, the children have been choreographing their own dances to demonstrate how various materials are recycled such as crushing, mixing and melting. They then performed their dances to the rest of the class.

Y6 meets Roald Dahl!

On Friday 20th January Y6 worked with a visiting actor, who brought facts about Roald Dahl to life in a very entertaining way. The children learnt about Dahl's life during the war, his time at school and how he became an author. He read and recited funny extracts from many of Dahl's books bringing the characters to life. Mrs Davidson is still recovering from her brush with George's Marvellous Medicine!

Back in class the children researched the life of Roald Dahl and produced some wonderful powerpoints and word factfiles; here are some for you to enjoy!

5 Maple go for the Turner Prize.

This afternoon saw 5 Maple attempt their first piece of theme related art of the term. When asked last week what they would like the art aspect of 'Reaching the Summit' to involve, the overwhelming response was that they would love to paint mountain landscapes. Where better to look than the work of William Turner, regarded as one of the finest landscape artists ever? We looked at some of Turner's mountain landscapes, discussed his use of light and colour and used two colours, black and white, to see what effects we could create. Spot the real Turner landscape!!

There's no business like snow business!!

The children at Oakfield Junior today felt really sorry for all of the children in other schools, who have had to stay at home because of the inclement weather. We braved the elements and ventured down to the field for an afternoon of fun in the snow. The children designed snowmen and snow sculptures in teams in a bid to win first prize in the snowman building competition. The results were fantastic. Judge for yourself...

Year Four DT Week

Year Four have been honing our sewing skills this week. We have designed money containers for different end-users and begun to manufacture them.
We have learned how to join fabric using running and back-stitch, how to hide the joins with hems and how to add decoration with cross stitch. We are enjoying using the needle and thread. The hardest parts are threading the needle and making the starting and finishing stitch. The best bit is when we have finished the joining stitches and turn the purse inside out for the first time.

Year 3 Geordie day

On Friday 4th December, Year 3 had a GEORDIE DAY!
Since September the theme we have been studying is Our local area. So to celebrate everything we have learnt, we decided to have this very special day!
The children were involved in learning some geordie slang and trying to speak it at various points during the day, creating a geordie dictionary, looking at geordie recipes, singing some geordie songs and they were also very lucky to have a talk from a real georide miner!
The children and y3 teachers were also dressed up for the occasion, I must say that the children all looked fabulous! Thank you to all the parents who helped make their child look like a true geordie!
The children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed their geordie day and it was impressive seeing how much they children had remembered from their lessons!

Poppy Littlemore says "I enjoyed listening to the miner because he was funny."
Daniel Preece says "We learnt a song called the Blaydon races, it was very fun doing it."
Anna Ryle says "We learnt the Geordie dictionary and some of the words were funny. Some of us spoke geordie on the yard at playtime!"

Wednesday brought the chance for 5 Willow the visit Heworth CLC and experience a day of programming Lego robots to follow commands, (They’re far easier than children!!). After being introduced to their new plastic friends, children worked in pairs to input the commands to make them undertake a series of tasks. Judging by the smiles it was learning enjoyed by all!

The School Council meet the Major (or is it the other way round?)

On Tuesday the 8 members of the school Council spent the day at the Civic Centre finding out about the work of the elected councillors and the major. Once there they had the chance to sit in the council chamber and find out about the work of Gateshead Council. After lunch it was questions with the major before finally watching a real council meeting in operation. Not an everyday experience and one we are sure they will cherish!

Year 5 Football Team Through to Final.

On a typically bitter and windswept Gateshead Stadium, the Year 5 football team progressed without trouble to the Felling Gateshead FA Final (to be held in the summer…yippee). On Friday they won their group and remained unbeaten. Up first were local rivals Kells Lane. Nick Hall opened the scoring after 8 SECONDS and that set the tone for a 3-0 win; Nick scoring the perfect hat-trick.
The next challenge was Windy Nook, a game of no goals where both defences proved up to the task. Finally Colegate and another 3-0 win, Kieran Costello (2) and another from Nick doing the damage.
Overall, a superb team performance by all 10 squad members. Roll on the final….and hopefully a bit of sun!!
