A further huge well done and thank you to those people who skipped for over an hour - you need a relaxing Radox bath!
Hopefully we've raised enough money to make a difference.

Semi Final defeat for Year 6

After battling hard to reach the semi final of the County Durham FA 7 a side cup, the Year 6 team fell at the penultimate hurdle. In a group of 5 schools the boys gave it there best go but lost to some excellent footballing sides. After defeats against East Stanley (1-3), West Boldon (1-4) and Castletown (2-3) they finally recorded a victory beating George Washington (2-1). Although a little disappointed they still have a chance of silverware in the Gateshead competitions.

Comfortable win for Year 6 boys team

On Thursday the year 6 team played their latest Felling FA league game at home to Colegate. With all 9 squad players on top form they dominated for the full 30 minutes and ran out 9-0 winners. Aaron scored 4, Jamie 3 and Oliver 2. Well played, the best you looked in a long time.

Girls Football Team Come So Close

The Year 5/6 girl’s football team came so close to making the final of the County Durham 7 a side cup. On Wednesday they travelled to Pelton for their semi final. First up was a game against Catchgate. A bright start saw us race into a 2-0 lead with goals from Megan C and Anna. This forced Catchgate to rally and they quickly pulled a goal back but we hung on to win 2-1. The second game was against the host team Pelton. It was a tight game with few chances, but unfortunately Pelton did nick a goal to run out 1-0 winners. Unlucky girls, but you have improved greatly as the season went on!

Here come the Girls………

After a Winter break that seems to have lasted a lifetime, the football season recommenced on Wednesday night with the girls team in the first round of the County Durham FA 7-a-side. On a cool evening first up was a game against the hosts Colegate. Early pressure saw Oakfield take a quick 2 goal lead through Megan C, but despite creating many more chances no further goals were added. The second game saw a tough 0-0 draw against Jarrow St Bedes, a game with chances at both ends but no one to apply the finishing touch. With Colegate and Jarrow drawing 1-1, it meant Oakfield progressed to the semi final, new s that was greeted by 10 screams so loud my eardrums are still ringing!!!

Year 6 Journey Through Time

As part of our new topic we have been looking at The Depression during the 1930's. In particular we have been finding out about the Jarrow March.

Here is a diary entry written by Bethany, Elle and Owen

We also looked at photographs taken at the time of the march and thought about how the men might have been feeling.

Y6 meets Roald Dahl!

On Friday 20th January Y6 worked with a visiting actor, who brought facts about Roald Dahl to life in a very entertaining way. The children learnt about Dahl's life during the war, his time at school and how he became an author. He read and recited funny extracts from many of Dahl's books bringing the characters to life. Mrs Davidson is still recovering from her brush with George's Marvellous Medicine!

Back in class the children researched the life of Roald Dahl and produced some wonderful powerpoints and word factfiles; here are some for you to enjoy!

The School Council meet the Major (or is it the other way round?)

On Tuesday the 8 members of the school Council spent the day at the Civic Centre finding out about the work of the elected councillors and the major. Once there they had the chance to sit in the council chamber and find out about the work of Gateshead Council. After lunch it was questions with the major before finally watching a real council meeting in operation. Not an everyday experience and one we are sure they will cherish!

Well Done Year 6, you worked very hard on these poems and because of that produced some fantastic, descriptive poetry - you made me scared!! Mrs McCormack.

Some you win…some you don’t!!

Another busy week of football got underway despite a major flu outbreak. On Tuesday a depleted Year 5/6 team travelled to Chester-le-Street for the Durham area semi final of the National Under 11 7-a-side competition. (There’s a mouthful of a name!) As winners of Gateshead’s leg we took on the regional winners from Chester-le-Street, South Tyneside and Darlington.

Three very close matches followed. An opening 2-0 win against Mount Pleasant (Darlington) was followed by a 4-3 lose against East Boldon. The final game saw Hetton Lyons overcome us 3-1. Jack, Jamie, Nick and three goals from Lewis were not quiet enough and dreams of Wembley finished.

However on Wednesday an equally depleted team won their first round group in County Durham’s FA 7-a-side competition. A 2-2 draw with Durham St Godrics was followed by a 2-0 victory over Lumley. Jamie with 3 goals, and Nick bagging one. Hopefully another good cup run on the way!

Keep checking for updates.

First trophy in the bag for Y5/6 footballers

The combined year 5/6 team have bagged their first trophy of the season by winning the Gateshead Felling FA round of the National Under 11 7-a-side competition. They qualified for the local final by beating Falla Park 6-0 (Jamie Johnson and Nick Hall both with hat-tricks) and Carr Hill 2-0 (Lewis McNall and Jack Fisher Diaz with the goals.

The final was a closer affair and started with a 0-0 draw against Harlow Green. This was followed by a 3-0 win over Windy Nook and a 3-1 victory over Colegate. A very impressive Lewis McNall scoring all 6!!

The semi Final of the Durham leg of the National Under 11 7-a-side competition is this Tuesday, at Red Rose in Chester-le-Street against schools from Darlington, South Tyneside and Chester-le-Street.

Y6 Criminal Damage Project

Year 6 are currently taking part in a local 'Criminal Damage Project'. The project involves designing a brightly coloured poster to highlight the issues of vadalism and criminal damage in our area. Entries for the competition will be judged by the children and 5 posters will then be entered. The winning posters will be displayed around our area on buses, metro stations and bus stops. Watch this space for updates.

It has been really fun working on the posters.Lots of people have come up with some really good ideas. Nathan Forster

It has been really good looking at criminal damage and designing posters about it, lots of people have had some really good ideas and they are going to go on buses and phone boxes.
Rhys Gilhespy

I have realy enjoyed working on the crimanal damage progect as I love doing art work and it is very exciting to see who will win! Anna Kay

Newcastle Eagles Visit

Year 5 and year 6 had a fantastic afternoon today – the Newcastle Eagles came into school to teach us about healthy eating, the dangers of smoking, why we should stay fit and of coarse, to play basketball!

“It was really good. I learnt that you can waste 11 minutes of your life just by smoking 1 cigarette! The basketball players were fab, they were really funny!” said Connor in 6 Cedar.

The teachers decided which child had contributed the most throughout the 4 sessions and that child won a prize. Congratulations to Kevin in 6 Birch who won a Newcastle Eagles t-shirt. We also had a basketball competition which Chris in 5 Maple won, and Lewis in 6 Birch came runner up. They won tickets to the next Newcastle Eagles game - well done Chris and Lewis!

Thank you to the Eagles for a fun afternoon!

Reported by ICT Club

Year 6 School Trip

Year 6 had a fantastic day at Harhope Quarry on Tuesday. We became scientists for the day as we investigated the rivers there to help our understanding in our Topic, Waters of Tyne.

The children put their wellies on and got into the river to measure the width, how much energy it had, how fast something floated down it and the angle of the slopes. It was really cold but really fun. No one got too wet though (well except from Ethan!).

A massive thank you to Mrs Soulsby, Mrs Brown, Mrs Richardson and Mrs Mather for coming with us. Without you it wouldn't have been possible.

Pictures to follow!

6 Birch Class Assembly

Well done to all the stars of 6 Birch for doing a fantastic job in their assembly this morning. Miss Graham is very proud of you all!

The assembly was completely their own work. The children suggested what the assembly could be on and then we had a vote to decide the best topic. In ICT they researched their chosen time and began to write a script. The children were given a strict time limit of 1 minute so they had to be very selective about what they could say and only include the exciting parts! All of the children worked exceptionally hard and I'm sure you'll agree that their efforts paid off. Perhaps we're looking at the next Steven Spielberg?

The assembly was fantastic, well done 6 Birch.

Year 6's Sound Poem

Year 6 have been studying a variety of poems about feelings and emotions. We have written a short anthology based on the sounds we could hear in the playground. We were not only thinking about the different sounds, but thinking about the feelings and emotions the sounds reminded us of. We wrote our poems in groups and used metaphors, personification and similes to help describe how the sounds made us feel. We hope you enjoy it as much as Miss Graham did!

The Sound of the Play Ground

In the haven of the peaceful playground,
The gentle wind carries an array of sounds…

An anthology of poems from Year 6

The wind enveloped me in its whistling way.
Footsteps were mice creeping up on me.
The grass crunched as people waded through the long stalks.
Trees swayed gently while bushes rustled,
And the air suffocated me in the smooth majestic sky.

The peaceful sounds enveloped me and soothed my ears,
As I strolled on to the yard.
The wind whistled calmly,
As it raced like a bullet through the elegant trees deeply agitating them.
The birds chirped tunefully,
As they glided elegantly through the air just skimming the leaves.
The relaxing silence was broken by the screeching of cars.
They were a raging storm, roaring down the road
With their clattering engines shouting loudly.

The mournful wind sighed amongst the shaky trees,
I heard distant humming like evil honey bees.
Blackbirds were cheeping, dogs were yapping and leaping around,
The playground was bursting with a variety of sounds!
The footsteps were mice squeaking round the flower pots,
The stones were clattered, darting like little live dots.
It was relaxing, it wasn’t loud,
The playground was bursting with a variety of sound.

The swaying grass rocked and rolled like an 80’s rock star.
The bees buzzed in the warm sunshine.
Drowned out footsteps stomped past my ear.
The tweeting birds were a beautiful symphony waiting for me to dance.

I lay still and peaceful on the grass, listening quietly.
Tranquil wind weaved through my fragile fingers.
Whispering trees swaying in the breeze were a choir of children.
Lush green leaves pirouetted like professional ballerinas.
I lay still and peaceful on the grass, listening quietly.

I sat still and calmly on the bench, listening silently.
High in the leaves feathery companions sing like a high pitched orchestra,
Church bells fade into the busy streets.
The gentle traffic is a comforting envelope.
I sat still and calmly on the bench, listening silently.

Year 6 Trip to Eden Camp

Year 6 had a fabulous day at Eden Camp on Wednesday. The ex-prisoner of war camp in Malton, North Yorkshire, has lots of huts, all dedicated to different aspects of the 2nd World War. These ranged from how Hitler rose to power, what a typical street looked liked during the early 40s, if it had just been bombed and what it looked like during a black out.

All of the children's behaviour was exemplary and their enthusiasm was outstanding - a credit to Oakfield. Just to make the day even better, the sun was out so we all sunbathed over lunch then had an ice cream!

A massive thank you to Mrs Leonard, Mrs Ibbetson and Mrs Russell who came with us and helped enormously.

Year 6 Adventure Stories

The sky was as bright as the shimmering sun, the clouds flowed by – every thing was perfect. We were taking our dog Max, our chocolate brown Labrador, for a walk, along the top of the sunny beach. “I want to hold the lead!” I shouted.
“No you’re too young!” exclaimed Josh, my older brother.
“Please,” I yelled.
“No!” Josh answer back.
The clouds turned black; the rain poured down. I dropped my teddy bear; I went to see where he fell – then, all of a sudden…..

“Help me!” I screamed as loud as I could.
“I’ve got you!” Josh shouted as he held tightly onto my arm.
The mighty waves climbed the daring cliff .The jagged rocks dug into my back.

Max began to run as fast as lighting – where was he going? “Max come back,” Josh yelled, but Max slowly faded into the fog. “I’m scared of heights,” I said tearfully.

“Look over there, there’s Max,” screamed Josh with joy.! Max was with some people; there were about 50 years old, both with no hair. What were they doing? “One, two, three, pull!” they exclaimed. They started pulling me up from the awkward position. “Let’s call your dad to come and collect you,” said one of the men.
By Rachel Senior

It was a gloomy day with dark clouds hanging from the misty sky. As we slowly walked down the narrow path, we could see the edge of the cliff. My senses tickled me, maybe something was going to happen, was it going to happen to me or my sister?
As my dog was pulling hard on the lead, my sister decided she wanted to have the lead. I knew if I gave her the lead she wouldn’t have enough strength to hold on to it, so I said no. Of course, my annoying younger sister wasn’t happy. So she started to shout at me ragefully. In anger my sister threw her beloved teddy near the edge of the cliff .She ran crying towards the teddy. I ran as quickly as I could towards her, but got slowed down by the winds getting stronger and stronger. As my sister picked up the dampened teddy she slipped; luckily she grabbed on to a rock. I wanted to help her but ungovernable terror gripped me and stuck me to the ground. Thoughts ran wildly in my head. Could this be the disaster I could sense?

I sprinted back home with the dog to our house and told mum. When we got back my mum cuddled my petrified sister. After that we promised we would never argue again, I also told her there would be a nice surprise when she got back.
By Matthew Smith

It was a cloudy, stuffy day as we strolled along the magnificent landscape; the cliffs were as white as chalk as the wind propelled the sea against the cliffs. The sun sang a soft melody as it hung in the sky – it shone straight through the soft, thin layer of water and to the depths, where life was hard to spot. We were there walking our dog, Jacob, on that summers morning. We were just tiptoeing along the cliff tops when my sister Jenny, decided she wanted to hold Jacobs long, black lead. I didn’t like this so we almost started playing tug of war over it. So, for fun I let go, her sweaty hands slipped off the lead and she was left hanging, yes hanging on the cliff edge …

She was screaming like an old train tooting its horn, it nearly burst my ear drums. Why was the weather changing? The sky was going a light reddish colour like a devil in the sky, and then the rain came. Jacob ran off, we didn’t know where but my muscles had to be strong to hold her. I felt exhausted just thinking about it. Then I saw Jacob coming back with, what looked like a women. Before we knew it, they were upon us. Next thing we knew a lifeguard in a speed boat was below Jenny, she climbed down the rocks and clambered into the boat. She was taken to hospital.

On the way to visit her I looked at my arm it looked twice the size it was. I gave some flowers to her, and she said “you can hold the lead in future!” The doctor told me she’d be fine in about two weeks, we promised we’d never fight again, but did I mean it…

Year 6 Mystery/Ghost Stories

We saw the big old tree, it swayed in the wind, the smell of burnt wood hung in the air. My heart was pounding as I eased myself around the tree, and there it was .Silence struck me and covered me like a blanket . The Things illuminous eyes struck me then small green snakes as thin as a pen flung out of the Things mouth, one at a time .It glistened like wet leather , ungovernable terror gripped me as the Thing came out of the perfectly black bush.

The Thing grew bigger and bigger until it came to a stop. I tried to run, but it was too late….

By Andrew Todd

We saw the big old tree. There was an illuminous green glow coming from behind the tree, as I slowly glanced up to the top of the tree I couldn’t believe it. I could hear a mumbling sound getting louder and louder. There was a burnt smell drifting across the garden from next door. I felt scared.

As I glanced up the top of the tree again, I gasped, there it was. A green rounded sort of thing. What did it want with us? It had something in its’ hands, it looked like a person. We were all stood there, silent, and then it spoke….

I pushed myself back. Even my little sister was silent. It jumped. It hit the ground with a ringing concussion. It slowly but steadily came towards us. What had we done?

Year 6 - Mrs McCormack

miss clark

What the children say...
Mrs McCormack has long blonde hair. She is a cheerful, caring, friendly and funny person. Mrs McCormack is a really nice teacher to have because she always smiles. She is absolutely monkey mad and has toy monkeys in the classroom. Mrs McCormack works us hard but it’s always for a good reason and always helps us if we are stuck. She is firm and keeps us on the right track and if we do, she gives out lots of stamps and merits. She is fast on the computer and knows everything about them. Mrs McCormack is known as the best teacher that ever lived, by her class.

6M RE

In RE we have been looking at making choices and what beliefs and values we base our choices on. We then looked at the 10 Commandments and tried to place them in order of importance, for what we believe. We then turned them into modern day language and used poetic verse as a way to help us remember them.

Do not covet,
Do not lie,
Respect your parents- Stop your sigh,
Don't idolise,
Don't dare roll them eyes,
Only worship me,
Remember to keep the sabbath holy,
Never misuse my name,
Adultery is not a game,
Do not steal,
Murdering is not the deal.
By Louis, Thomas and Emily

Never murder it's against the law,
Don't steal, swear or do adultery so.
Treat your parents with respect,
God's name you must protect.
Follow my rules one to ten,
Listen while I read again.
Remember to always be true,
Remember I'm the God for you.
Do not commit jealously,
Relax on Sundays, keep them free.
By Bethany Simpson, Izaak Scott-Briggs and Hannah Cairns

Do not murder steal or lie, it will make you sigh and cry,
Honour your mother and father to the very last,
Make jeolousy a thing of the past,
Please do not abuse the name of God,
I am the one and only, remember to worship me.
by Kate Glasgow,Emma Graham and Abby Winship.

6M Art

In Art this week we have been looking at sunsets. We researched the different colours and experimented with different techniques when using chalk pastels to blend and contrast the colours. We then used black paper to create a bridge in the background.

6M Upthrust

In Science this week we carried out an investigation to see if water provides an upward force on objects. We looked at the forces acting on floating and sinking objects. Also we suspended objects in the air and weighed them using a forcemeter, then we weighed the same object whilst it was submerged in water and found that objects weigh less in water.

Here are some pictures of us carrying out our investigation.

Year 6 Christmas 'Safety' Present

Thank you again to the BP Magnus Platform (oil rig) for the children's reflective badges. Every child in Year 6 recieved one of these to help advertise the importance of safety in school and at home. As the Magnus Safety Representative said, "We felt this would be a good opportunity to involve families and friends in promoting safety during the winter months."

Here are some pictures of us on the last day before we broke up for Christmas holding up the badges.

Songs:

Christmas song
(To the tune of All I Want For Christmas Is You)

By Hannah Roe and Georgia Pirelli

Hope Santa knows what you are wanting,
You’ve sent your letter nice ‘n’ early.
(And iiiiiiiiiiiii)
Made angles in the deep snow,
With my friends and family.
Go to bed with eyes shut tight,

Christmas is coming

By Dominic Gowland, Joseph Vaughan and Luke Cuthbertson

Christmas is coming
Christmas is coming
Christmas is coming today
But it seems so far away
Christmas is coming today

Have a Christmas jiggy, buh, buh, buh
Every body’s happy, buh, buh, buh
Let’s have a Christmas party, buh, buh, buh

Santa is coming down the chimney tonight
Christmas pie and candle light
Making people happy
And being right
He is coming tonight, ho, ho, ho

Have a Christmas jiggy, buh, buh, buh
Every body’s happy, buh, buh, buh
Let’s have a Christmas party, buh, buh, buh

Have a Christmas jiggy, buh, buh, buh
Every body’s happy, buh, buh, buh
Let’s have a Christmas party, buh, buh, buh

You are the Christmas in me(To the tune of you are the music in me - high school musical 2)

By Louisa Preece

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na

You are the Christmas in me

Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na

You are the Christmas in me

You know the words once upon a time
When you listen it’s CHRISTMAS!
And when you dream there’s a chance you’ll find
Some presents in your fantasy (heeeee)
Your sleigh bells ring
Makes my heart ping

Santa’s on his sleigh tonight
A single toy
With lots of joy

Christmas song
By Robyn Leonard 6G

Christmas is coming
Christmas is coming
The time for joy and laughter
So put up your tree
Through on the lights
And get in the Christmas spirit

Pull the crackers
Eat the turkey
And the stuffing too
So much to do
In so little time
La la la

If your good
If your good
Santa will visit
Sleigh bells ring
Snow falls covering the ground
So remember
Santa is watching
All the time

And some poems...

Count down to Christmas!
By Christopher Taylor, Raees Khan, Oliver Davis

The countdown to Christmas has already begun,
Come and share the joy of Christmas fun,
Come and share the Christmas tradition
Every year Santa’s on a wonderful mission,
Delivering presents for girls and boys
Their parcels are filled with wonderful toys.

Christmas time

By Caitlin Taylor, Emily Senior and Tia Lindsay

Christmas time is coming near,
Full of laughter, full of cheer.
Christmas presents, stockings too,
Wrapped with love for me and you.
Families laughing having fun,
Christmas time has just begun.

Christmas is here
By Keira Scope

Christmas is here,
Children cheer,
For presents and joy all year.
We ask for pet bears and cute baby hares,
We are happy and eating our Christmas dinner,
We play cool games and every one is a winner.
Yes Santa is coming,
Yes Santa is coming,
Yes Santa is coming tonight,
So you better turn off your light.

Year 6 made marizpan fruits this afternoon as a Christmas present for their parents. They then wrapped them in tissue paper and put them in decorated boxes, which they had made the day before. Here are some pictures of 6M making their fruits, they had fun using the food colouring!!

Year 6 Christmas party

Thank you for a fantastic party, the children looked fab and the food was gorgeous. A special thank you to Mrs Robinson for organising all the food, we couldn't have managed without you.
We played party games, had a dance competition and danced the party away!!!
Daniel Martin busted some John Travolta moves while Connor showed us how to break dance and Dominic wowed us all with his disco dance moves. As for the girls we had Georgia and Amber show us their dance routine, Keira and Victoria twirled while Bethany, Laura and Abby didn't stop moving.

Here are some photos for you to enjoy:

Year 6 MP Visit

Clelland 4 Oakfield!

Yr 6 was learning about democracy as part of a citizenship program. They were given the opportunity to meet and interview the MP of Tyne Bridge, Mr David Clelland.

He answered many intriguing questions and explained the role of his exasperating job. He told us that democracy was the process whereby the nation makes decisions for themselves. Normally they go by the majority of the peoples’ votes, but sometimes the Government have to make the choice themselves because there might be a tie.

Yr 6 also noted that Mr Clelland travels to parliament Monday-Thursday to make important decisions with current Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Yr 6 loved asking David Clelland about his job and what he does for a living.

6M DT Week

Our DT design brief was to design and build a bridge to cross the river, allowing the boat to sail underneath it, while holding a given weight.
We all worked in groups to complete this challenge, making sure we worked co-operatively and as a 'team.'
Mark Foggin said, "It was a fun week and it was good because you don't get the opportunity to use the saws and other tools every week."
As a whole 6M thoroughly enjoyed the week and can't wait for our next DT week, which will be in the Spring term.

Here are some pictures of the groups with their finished bridges after they evaluated them. Some are more stable than others!!

Nina Weatherburn's Suspense Story

Fear That House

Shivering my arm reached out towards the mossy iron gate. As I clutched the handle tightly a trickle of fear ran down my spine. I felt so afraid and longed for her comforting hand to hold. How had it come to this? I had to get inside but how? What if I was seen? I pushed gently on the gate but harder than I should have done. All at once it scraped along the broken cobble path, singing a song of death. I quickly ran through and darted into a bush. Even though everything was silent now, the voice still rang in my head, her voice, I was almost sure it was her voice, but how?

Megan Fenwick's Suspense Story

The Haunted House

I stood shaking, staring at that freaky mansion. Should I go in? Yes, my feet were walking all by themselves. I slowly grabbed the iron gate and it screamed at me like Satin's child. Walking up the drive-way I felt like someone was following me. Was that just me? Getting nearer the mansion a smell suddenly hit my nose like a car hitting a small child,it was like an old dead body in a pathology lab. Why was I doing this? He could see me tripping, so why didn't he come and rescue me? Stumbling on the decking, then reaching for the unpainted door handle I.......

Luke Cuthbertson's Suspense Story

The Night of Death

Getting closer and closer to the huge, peculiar gates. I was scared for myself. What was that feeling? My force from my body pulled me on. I opened the gate praying it wouldn't make a noise. The gate screamed at me like a hurt child.

Death was surrounding me like an army of soldiers. Fear killed my heart. My soul dragged me down, dragged me down. Frozen with fear I bellowed out loud. Blood began to drip from a tree. My hand reached out to pull the handle open, the smell of dead bodies hit my nose . . .

One World Week 6G

Next week 6G will be studying France. If any one has got any French resources that they wouldn't mind bringing into school, it would be much appreciated! I think we should try eating snails and frogs legs....

VISITING ARTISTS

On Friday 19th January Mike and Tanya, a calligrapher and artist, worked with Year 6 for the whole day. They began the day looking at the patterns you can make with words. They had lots of fun doing this and were amazed at the different ways they could present the same word. Next they made templates for the letters in their words and used different colours to make an interesting pattern. Then they stuck the letters onto transparent plastic. These are to be displayed on the school bridge and in the Shipley Art Gallery.

Year 6 can't wait to see their art work presented on the bridge for all to see!!

6C ONE WORLD WEEK

In 6C we have been studying about Spain. We have made a mood board representing what we think of when we talk about Spain. During our ICT lessons we have produced a fact file containing the main information about Spain, copying and pasting facts from the Internet.

We have been bringing into school resources and artefacts from home about Spain to make a class display.

We are all enjoying learning about Spain and wish it was One World Week all the time and we wish we were in Spain!!!

Year 6 One World Week

During the last week of this half term (WB October 16) 6C will be learning about Spain and 6L will be learning about Mexico.
Both classes will learn about their countries through: music, art, drama and ICT.
